Student Leadership Opportunities
Students at South Callaway Middle School are encouraged to find something they are passionate about and take a leading role in that area. Many different types of leadership opportunities are posted in the cafeteria. Students must fill out an application and interview for the positions. There are also many celebrations and events that students have the chance to organize, prepare for and run.

Veteran's Day Assembly
Students at the South Callaway Schools put on a K-12 Veteran's Day Assembly to honor the local veterans. They gave speeches, handed out pins, conducted a flag folding ceremony, bands and choirs performed patriotic songs and a video montage was presented. The students raised over $1,700 to present to the Honor Flight that day as well.

The Announcers are responsible for reading announcements over the intercom on a daily basis. Five student leaders are needed to fill this position.
Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate an excellent school attendance rate, possess a high level of responsibility, and work effectively as a team. Morning Meeting CrewMorning Meeting crew members needed to plan, coordinate and implement the South Callaway Middle School morning meetings each day. Approximately 6 people are needed…two from each grade. Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) establishing and carrying out a routine to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, deliver Sports/Activities information, obtain & deliver Teacher Announcements, researching and delivering a “Quote of the Day” and recognizing student birthdays. Other topics may be developed by the crew if time allows.
Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate an excellent school attendance rate, possess a high level of responsibility, have the ability speak publically, be able to gather and use information appropriately, adhere to a strict time deadline and work effectively as a team. The Morning Meeting Crew must be available each morning before school and other times as the Crew determines necessary. Student AdvisorsMr. Bonsall is seeking six students…two from each grade level to be members of the Principal’s Student Advisory Board. The purpose of the Student Advisors is to act on behalf of all of the students in South Callaway Middle School. Student Advisors communicate with their peers to gather information on grade level and/or school-wide issues. They serve as representatives, “the Student Voice”, so to speak, of their grade level and of the school as a whole. Advisors work directly with the principal to cooperatively improve the education and environment at SCMS.
Student Advisors meet with Mr. Bonsall periodically to communicate the students’ viewpoint and give input on various school issues or projects. Students Advisors should be able communicate effectively with ALL students, not just friends. They should be able to voice thoughts and opinions, work effectively and cooperatively with others and be open to the win-win philosophy of team work. Students Advisors must be in good academic standing, exhibit satisfactory school conduct and attendance, and be a responsible school citizen. Buddy Pack CrewSix students are needed to assist with assembling and distributing Buddy Packs. Buddy Packers will start packing on Monday until finished and then be responsible for delivering them on Friday.

EAT - HomecomingThe Environment Action Team (E.A.T.) will make our school a great place to be and to learn in. Our first undertaking will be transforming our school to show our school spirit for homecoming. Below you will find several descriptions for things volunteers will possibly be working on.
-Decorating -Hallways/Lockers/Doors/Classrooms/Bulletin Boards (Theme: School Spirit) -Decorating Sidewalks -Sidewalk chalk designs that show our school spirit. -Homecoming/Spirit Poster Contest -Establishing, participating in, and helping to coordinate a “Homecoming/Spirit” poster contest. -MORE Fun Things to Come! -We will have some additional things we will talk about doing this coming Tuesday during pride time. The world can change.....it starts with YOU! Flag OfficialsWould you like to be in charge of raising the United States and the Missouri Flags outside on the pole in front of the building every morning and/or taking them down each afternoon?
We need Flag Officials to do this job. You will be taught how to properly take care of the flags….how to raise & lower them and how to fold them. Mrs. Peterson is looking for at least two students. If more are interested, she will choose two to raise it in the morning and two to lower it in the afternoon. IchthyologistMrs. Bobryk needs a 6th grade student to care for the health and environment of the fish in the science classroom. Duties: planting aquatic plants, feeding fish, cleaning habitat and monitoring fish health.

Student Editor/TutorMrs. Zolinski is looking for a student with superior knowledge of writing conventions who is able to give constructive criticism and coaching without being rude. This student would be available to help students with editing questions, to read over classmate’s papers and journal entries, give feedback and help to prepare them for publishing. A reference from Mrs. Hofherr or another teacher with knowledge of your writing ability is required.

The Cleaning Crew is responsible for the sweeping and cleaning of the gym after morning meetings, assemblies and ceremonies. The crew is also responsible for cleaning the bleachers, turning in any lost items to the staff on duty and closing the bleachers. Approximately 5 people are needed to fill this position.
Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate an excellent school attendance rate, possess a high level of responsibility, and work effectively as a team. Welcoming BuddySix students, one girl and one boy, from each grade level are needed to be a Welcoming Buddy. When a new student enrolls, the Welcoming Buddy from the appropriate grade level and gender will be responsible for helping the newcomer to feel comfortable and welcome in becoming a Bulldog. The Welcoming Buddy will give the new student (and possibly the new student’s parents) a tour around the building and show them where classes and lockers are. The Buddy will tell the new student about how the school day works, the general rules and procedures of the school, school activities and answer questions the student or parents have.
The Welcoming Buddy will help the new student through the first few days of “being new”. The Buddy is the new student’s helper…. introducing them to other students, eating lunch with them, and helping them find their way around between classes. The Buddy should seek out the new student during the 1st few days and make sure that all is going well. This leadership position may require you to be out of the classroom for a whole period. Qualifications: A Welcoming Buddy gives the FIRST IMPRESSION of our school family to a new student and his/her parents, so a positive, friendly and kind personality to everyone is an absolute must. He/She has school pride and school spirit and is proud to be a Bulldog. He/She must be able to easily communicate with both students and adults that they do not know. He/she must know and follow the school rules and procedures. He/She must take the initiative to communicate with their own teachers to get assignments they miss while being out of class and get them turned in in a timely manner. A Buddy must be a satisfactory role model in the school and have limited absences BontanistMrs. Bobryk needs a 6th grade student to help take care of plants in the 6th grade hallway and classrooms. Duties: planting and repotting, selecting plants, watering and fertilizing.

Environmental Action Team (E.A.T.)The Environment Action Team (E.A.T.) will make our school a great place to be and to learn in. Joining this action team will allow you to take an active role in the following activities:
-Painting Murals -Murals could be spirit murals, leader-in-me murals, educational murals, etc. -Decorating -Hallways/Lockers/Doors/Classrooms/Bulletin Boards (can be for special occasions/holidays or just for fun) -Campus Clean Up -Making the outside of our school look great! This may include trips to the football/softball fields to clean up. -Planting and taking care of Plants -Could include planting trees, creating and tending various gardens, and landscaping. -Decorating Sidewalks -Sidewalk chalk designs for special occasions or more permanent designs. -Creating Inviting Environments Outside and Inside of the School -Creating benches outside, making study nooks with couches/chairs etc, painting windows, creating posters, even making t-shirts that identify you as part of the E.A.T The world can change.....it starts with YOU! HerpetologistMrs. Bobryk needs a 6th grade student to care for the health and environment of two red-earred sliders. Duties: planting aquatic plants, feeding turtles, cleaning habitat and monitoring turtle health.

Red Ribbon Week AssistantsMrs. Peterson needs one student from each grade to help plan and assist with Red Ribbon Week, October 28-31. If you are interested, sign your name on the line below by your grade level. We will meet with Mrs. Jordan and assistants from her building as soon as possible to plan.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Leader In Me TableThree students every hour, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. are needed to help Mrs. Stone run the Leader In Me table at Parent-Teacher conferences October 16th. You can help run the table while your parents are visiting with teachers!! You will help Mrs. Stone give out information and pamphlets to parents when they come to conferences and show parents how to put their ideas in Answer Garden on the laptop.
If you would like to help: 1. Sign your name by one of the times on the sign-up sheet. 2. Take a parent permission slip and write the time in the blank. 3. Take the permission slip home and get it signed by a parent. 4. Turn your signed permission slip into Mrs. Peterson or Mrs. Stone |
